Horizontal ridges, also known as Beau’s lines, are more often linked to serious health conditions. These indentations may form after a significant illness or physical trauma, such as a heart attack or respiratory disease. When Beau’s lines appear across multiple nails, they may indicate systemic diseases or periods of intense stress, which temporarily disrupt nail growth.

Lastly, white horizontal stripes, called Muehrcke’s lines, are associated with liver or kidney issues and low blood protein levels, often seen in those with malnutrition or chronic liver disease. Though many nail issues can be improved with proper nutrition and lifestyle adjustments, any sudden or unusual changes should be discussed with a healthcare provider, as they can be indicators of health concerns requiring attention.
